 What it is

SCENT GLANDS IN MALES:

Males have multiple scent glands; two are the most evident as the oil they produce create a bold spot on the head and a brown/yellow stain under the chin since they reach maturity.

POUCH:

Only females have the pouch and it is located on the abdomen (belly).

The pouch is called marsupium and it is where their joeys grow, raise and are carried.

BACK FEET ANATOMY:

They have 5 toes; two of them are exclusively used for grooming purpose and the nails don't grow longer, reasons why must NOT be trimmed! They are slimmer compared to the others and close to each other.

Their opposable thumb (similar to ours) has no nail.

TEETH:

Sugar Gliders have retractable gums which hide the full length of their teeth.

Their incisors are different from the rodents ones and they don't keep growing, reason why they must NOT be trimmed!

Pet Sugar Gliders are prone to dental problems as they don't use their incisors for gouging the tree bark like they constantly do in the wild; offering enrichment to help using and clean them is advisable.

 How to trim nails

One of the "musts" in caring for your Sugar Gliders is trimming their nails.

The time frame varies as it depends on how much they wear them down, usually it will happen every 1-2 weeks.

We want to make sure you have the tools to learn to do it yourself stress free.

All our little friends, before coming to you, had experienced nail trimming in the way demonstrated in the video.

If you keep following the steps in the video, your Suggies' and your experience will become an easy routine.

Patience, no rush and treats are key during this process, as always with any of your animal friends!

WHAT YOU NEED BEFORE STARTING:

  • FAVORITE TREATS

  • LITTLE ANTI-PILL SQUARE FLEECE

  • FLOUR IN A SMALL CONTAINER

  • NAIL CLIPPERS

Remember to have all of these ready to be used before getting the Sugar Glider out.
